This Scrimshaw kit will take you way back--all the way back to early America when whalers would spend their idle hours at sea, etching drawings on items that were readily available such as whale teeth and bones, with sail needles, nails, or pocket knives. After they scratched the art work into the surface of the bone, they would rub lamp black or tobacco juice into the scratch to reveal the drawing. With our kit, you can experience this art form too as you scrimshaw the images of a hunt, big catch, or simply the family name on your very own bone-handled pocket knife.
